Tyson Fury’s ailment has forced the bout between him and Oleksandr Usyk scheduled for February 17 to be postponed.
Egis Klimas, Usyk’s manager, informed Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated that Fury may need to wait “several months” to return to action due to a cut he sustained while training.
Klimas also mentioned that Usyk is looking for a replacement opponent in an attempt to save the program on February 17.
There are discussions with Usyk defending the heavyweight titles of the WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring against mandatory IBF challenger Filip Hrgovic, according to boxing analyst Dan Rafael.
Mike Coppinger of ESPN reports that Fury’s cut was deemed “severe” and necessitated stitches.
The undisputed heavyweight title bout between Fury and Usyk was scheduled to take place at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The original date of the fight was supposed to be December 23, but it wasn’t made official.
Fury had to reschedule his fight with Usyk because he struggled in his Oct. 28 fight against Francis Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion who was making his professional boxing debut.
Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren, stated that his client received cuts from Ngannou and would require “a fortnight off,” leaving him with just six weeks to train for Usyk.
According to Matt Majendie of The Standard, the only requirement from Saudi Arabian authorities regarding the timing was that Fury and Usyk engage in combat at some point during Riyadh Season, which occurs every year from October to March.
Fury prevailed in a split decision to preserve his perfect record of 34-0-1 against Ngannou. In the third round, he was knocked out. In his professional career, it was only the seventh occasion when he was dropped by a rival.
Since Lennox Lewis defeated Evander Holyfield in 1999, there hasn’t been a clear-cut heavyweight champion in boxing.
